Shakespeare's Pub & Grill was opened on June 1, 1999 by local resident Suzi Spalj. Having graduated from City High and the University of Iowa, owning Shakespeare's Pub & Grill started with a dream of owning an A&W Rootbeer restaurant. She worked various jobs at fast-food restaurants for several years while maintaining a position at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics to make sure owning a restaurant is what she wanted to do. Hearing that a bar and restaurant named Jirsa's was for sale, she thought this would be a good fit for her dream. She applied and worked there for a month before deciding to buy the bar from it's previous owner. It has been a local neighborhood bar since the 1970's. Some of the previous names were the Annex, Billy's, and Jirsa's.
After a small fire in January 2016,
Shakespeare's Pub & Grill
was forced to close for 3 months. During this time, the restaurant was remodeled adding a much larger kitchen, walk-in cooler, handicap accessible bathrooms, and an outdoor beer garden.
Shakespeare's Pub & Grill offers a wide variety of beers and spirits. With 20 craft beers on tap, including at least 7 Iowa beers, there is something to please everyone. Our location has 15 tables and a full bar.
Shakespeare's Pub & Grill is open 365 days a year and serves breakfast until 11 am daily. A full menu is served 11 am - 10 pm daily. We even have a late-night menu that has many of our most popular appetizers! It is available from 10 pm - 1 am daily.
Join us for your favorite sporting event and if you are looking for something fun to do, we offer a fun game called Name That Tune on Wednesday nights at 7:30pm. We have a jukebox in our family friendly restaurant. We also have occasional karaoke once a month with no cover ever.
